Quick question for you all.. My '70 bug smells like burning.. To the point where I drove it the remaining 1/2 mile home the other day, very slowly with my seat belt off incase I became a fireball.

In short: I noticed a burning smell a fortnight-ish ago, topped up my oil even though it still showed within normal levels. Mentioned it when it went in for an MOT. They fully changed my oil. Passed it & I drove it 25 odd miles on the dual carriageway to a nearby town & back again.. Absolutely fine with no odd smells.

Then I take it into town & park it..(8ish miles) Fine. Drive it from town to the supermarket, still fine. Drive it home & it smells like impending doom. It's almost a burning rubber kind of smell..

My tyres are fine, & when I stop the engine doesn't feel any hotter than usual. I'm going to take it back over to the garage next week but until then any ideas? It was totally fine on the 50mile round trip, but I took it 8 odd miles into town & it smelt like death.

2:27 pm - bike racks

akiree
I have a 1971 semi-automatic super beetle. I am interested in carrying two bikes around sometimes. How do I make this work on an old bug?

I used to have a trunk mounted bike rack on a different car, but I didn't think I could use something like that over the engine on a bug. I've been googling and I can only find stuff for the new beetle. There have been a few references to needing an "extender" for a roof rack, I guess to clear the domed roof, but nothing that says "can be used on a classic bug". And from long, long ago I have a dim memory of a front rack for a bug, but I'm probably making that up..

So please point me in the direction of a bike rack. I don't have a trailer hitch, but am willing to consider it if that's the best option. A roof rack would be impractical as I park outdoors and cover my car every night, but again I will consider it if it's my only option. Cheap is better though, but I'm willing to buy used. Also if it matters I'm in Southern CA.

Thanks!

3:16 pm - VW Events.

mezzanotterose
I was wondering if anyone has pictures of events they have attended. It would be cool to see events from all over.

The reason for this inquiry is because we attend events and love it. But I see pics. in VW magazines from around the country and the world and wondered how much is left out because of limited space.

My family and I just got back from the "Bug-A-Paluza" show and camp out. It is held in Chattanooga,Tn. which is the town where the new VW plant is being built.
We had a great time in spite of the cold and then rain. Plus, going to shows always motivates us to work harder on our unfinished vehicles.
I'll post some pics. of it tonight.

If any one has pictures, from this or other events,we'd love to see them. :)

Good day.

so my 1970 single cab has been having a hard time starting up. once its started, it runs perfectly. but for some reason, i cant get it to do anything except click. occasionally it will try to turn over, but sounds awful. and then after trying for a while, sometimes it will even stop clicking. after a while, itll start, but its getting harder and harder. i make a little video of the engine while i tried to start it. basically, you get the jist in the first 30 seconds. its starts off making the weird trying noise, then just clicks for the rest of the video. sorry the video is so long, i thought it would make the weird noise again, but it never did.

anyone know what is wrong with it?

Potentially stupid question:

I have a 1970 1300 bug.. & the bonnet is a total rust minefield. Ebay has thrown up a bonnet for sale that is already orange, & it advertised as being for a '72 bug.

.. Will it fit on my '70?

Thank you!

10:23 am - My Bug's Restoration Website...

crazedvw
I've got a '73 Super Beetle I'm currently restoring following an engire fire back in 2004. I finally got around to building a website for it and wanted to introduce to everyone:

http://www.y73bug.com

In addition to the restoration part of it I've also scanned a small portion of my rather large collection of old Volkswagen ads and literature. (Look for it under Everything Else -> Literature and Ads) I'm currently in the process of scanning more and will be adding them in the coming days.

2:56 pm - Well Hello
staffordbrandon I bought a 71 beetle a little over a year ago. Replaced the master cylinder and some other brake issues (still a problem), but it was draining the battery, and eventually wouldn't start. i replaced the starter also got it turned over and started to drive it down the road to get some oil. Thats when it blew up. I've had it sitting in my garage since. A friend who works on drag cars around here, said he would help me see what's wrong with it and possibly fix it. yesterday we pulled it down to his "shop" pretty much all we got done yesterday. My father, said that it was probably something wrong behind the valves. I have very little knowledge of cars and bought it with the intentions of learning. the book is very confusing and I would like for someone who knows to help any way possible. I'll try and get some pictures of it on here soon. body is in very good condition.

12:15 am - any ideas?

l_2_the_oser
So I have two questions for y'all:

1) I decided that Im going to make seat covers for my car...  do any of you know of where i could find the pattern for the early model seats? I could do it myself, but it would save alot of time if theyre available to download and i couldnt find anything myself online....

2) ive been missing the latch that attaches on top of my backseat so that it stays up for just about ever - i want to do something creative with it; ive used ribbon but that became a pain in the but, i used the ends of a belt which was super cute but because of the sun/heat it never seemed to hold (the holes ripped)... so im not sure what to do!

Thanks for any help!!

Quick brakes query for y'all!

Basically.. My brakes have gone. Took the bug out for a short drive & they were working fine on the way there, but on the way back they were very very spongy. It's currently parked on an incline, & I've got enough brake-power to hold it still if I take the handbrake off but they're definitely not 100%.

This has happened before, due to insufficient amounts of brake fluid - but I had a look at the tank & the level seems ok.. The brakes themselves are pretty new, so I'm hoping that it's not a problem with them.

This is my first car, & whilst my bug-maintenance knowledge is growing I still don't really know a enough about cars to know what's caused this.. (or how to fix it!) So if anyone can offer me a suggestion as to what it could possibly be on my limited description & without seeing the car.. [I know. I know. Potentially stupid question!] I'd be really thankful! :)

& a picture of the bug. Just because.Collapse )
